Yin Yoga focuses on opening joints, creating flexibility and relieving stiffness. It targets the joints rather than the muscle although it does increase blood flow to the muscles as well. As we age our ligaments and cartilage dry out. This particular form of yoga increases lubrication and stretches the ligaments, tendons and cartilage of the joints as opposed to the stretch and development of muscle in Hatha Yoga which are my regular classes. This special class is designed to relieve joint stiffness and create flexibility and ease of movement, especially in those over 40. Those of you that have taken Hatha Yoga will find this a very different class. While the postures are the similar ( there are 108 yoga postures and variations thereof), we will be holding the postures for 5 to 8 minutes and working with breath and mantra during each posture. The breath work (pranayam) calms and balances the nervous system. It slows the mind and calms the emotions. It produces a great deal of healing energy in the body. The counter poses will be lightly active. 95% of poses are seated or prone. Only a few standing posture. As with my regular classes, you will work at your own pace and many alternate postures using supports will be offered. This is a slow, deeply meditative and healing class. There are no sun salutes. Class will be conducted in silence with brief opening and closing meditations. This is a powerful and intense form of yoga that will create ease of movement in your life, not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well. Bring a mat and blanket if you have them. mats and some blankets available.
